Hino Unveils All-Electric Le Series Medium-Duty Trucks at ACT Expo; Heavy Payloads in Zero-Emission Package

Toyota subsidiary Hino Trucks today launched its all-new, all-electric Le Series medium-duty commercial trucks at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Las Vegas. The Le Series is positioned as a heavy-hauling zero-emission solution, with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) that rivals the weight of nearly 16 tiny European city cars like the Renault Le Car.
“The Le Series represents a true leap forward in electrifying medium-duty fleets, combining the robustness our customers need with the zero-emission operation the future demands,” said Hino Trucks President Takashi Kamo during a press event at the expo. “This truck isn't just an electric conversion; it's a purpose-built electric platform designed for real-world commercial duty cycles.”
Hino says the Le Series is engineered for Class 5 and Class 6 applications—delivery, utility, and municipal fleets—offering a quiet, emission-free alternative without sacrificing payload capacity. Details on battery size and range are expected later this quarter, but early specs indicate a range of over 150 miles for typical urban and suburban routes.
“The Le Series fills a critical gap in the market—fleets that need a larger GVWR but can't yet justify the cost of Class 8 electric trucks,” said John Gartner, senior director of electromobility research at Navigant. “Hino's strong dealer network and Toyota's battery expertise give this truck a real shot at scaling.”

Hino, a Toyota subsidiary for decades, has been testing electric prototypes since 2021. The Le Series follows the company's existing diesel and hybrid medium-duty trucks but marks its first fully electric production model. The announcement at ACT Expo—the premier event for clean transportation technology—underscores Hino's commitment to the U.S. zero-emission commercial vehicle market.
The truck's name, “Le,” is a nod to Hino's history and also a playful reference to the tiny Renault Le Car, highlighting the Le Series' surprising payload-to-size ratio. Hino plans to begin production at its West Virginia assembly plant starting in 2025, pending certification.

For fleet operators, the Le Series offers a viable electric option for medium-duty applications that have been underserved by earlier electric trucks. Its high GVWR—reportedly exceeding 26,000 lbs—means it can handle heavy loads like pallets, construction materials, or refuse without the range anxiety of smaller EVs.
Environmentally, each Le Series truck could replace a diesel-guzzling medium-duty vehicle, reducing local emissions in urban corridors. Analysts predict that widespread adoption of trucks like the Le Series could cut fleet operating costs by 30 to 40 percent over the vehicle's lifetime, especially as fuel prices fluctuate and maintenance for electric drivetrains proves simpler.
“This is exactly the kind of product that moves the needle on commercial EV adoption,” commented Mary Nichols, former chair of the California Air Resources Board. “When a major OEM like Hino puts its weight behind a dedicated electric platform, it signals to the market that the transition is inevitable.”
Hino expects initial customer deliveries by mid-2025. The company will release full technical specifications, battery options, and pricing in the coming months.
